Cars Star In Hollywood Productions, By Ian McQueen

We've seen James Bond in a few different vehicles, most notably BMW's Z3 and a few Aston Martin's. Maserati was recently featured on the HBO hit series Entourage and Chrysler's long partnership with Universal's Fast & Furious franchise continues with the recent release of Fast Five, featuring the Dodge brand (and their first comprehensive cross promotion to boot). So how important are these starring roles for automobile manufacturers?

Very!!! Automobiles are no stranger to the product placement marketplace. Unlike most other product placement categories, cars are more organic to story lines. More over, it is very common for one of the lead actors in a movie or TV show to drive a vehicle, an implied endorsement without having to pay talent as is the case with commercials. Not to mention the fact that when automobiles are supplied for placement, thousands of dollars are saved in rental fees by production companies ("win, win" comes to mind).

Are some of these integrations over the top? Of course! As with any form of advertising, sometimes people get carried away. But that's only a small percentage of the many deals that are brokered between productions and car makers. The big picture? Cars are a big part of Hollywood productions and will continue to be. Auto manufacturers will continue to seek out high profile entertainment properties that offer starring roles for their vehicles.
