Do Some Tech Products Receive Starring Roles In Hollywood Productions? By Ian McQueen

Since the 80's, Hollywood productions have been hungry for the "latest and greatest" hi-tech products. In 1986, I struck a deal with Ubu Productions for my client Apple Computer to have Mac SE's (the hottest computer on the market at the time) featured on the hit series Family Ties for an entire season. When the the Jag production team contacted me 8 years ago about a spin-off series called NCIS (now a top 3 show), a deal was crafted with Dell Computer (still in place today) for truck loads of gear, with laptops and desktops earning more than just cameo roles weekly.

You would have to be living under a rock not to notice Apple's on-going starring roles in movies and television productions. Other companies such as Dell, Nokia, Vizio, HP and Cisco to name a few have all had their fifteen plus minutes of fame. Is it because these brands are paying for product placement? Not at all. Most brands retain an agency to manage product placement and brand integration programs, but no $$'s are paid to production companies for some pretty good on-camera exposure. What gives?!

The reality is some of the deals brokered save productions tens of thousands of dollars (LCD tv's, laptop/desktop computers). Also, brands are able to offer "real" prototype and custom products that lend credibility to Hollywood properties. In other cases, the director may just like the look of a certain product and it ends up being featured on-camera. So what do you think, has Hollywood gone tech crazy?!
