MTV's The Real World was one of the first reality series to explore product placement beyond the typical on camera exposure that included set dressing (products are seen in the background), hands-on use (with lead actors) and even verbal mention. While The Real World got things going, Survivor came along and pioneered the product placement (also know as brand integration) movement for reality television.
From a brand prospective, reality series offer an opportunity to develop meaningful integrations that organically weave your brand into on-going story lines. Your brand becomes one of the main characters, without giving viewers the perception that it strictly a monetary deal. As with any product placement, you need to carefully evaluate the opportunity and determine if at the end of the day the integration will help to move your brand forward.
So, what do you think, reality series or high profile Primetime shows such as America's #1 rated (non-reality) NCIS?
